Overview

ACS880 multidrive modules belong to ABB’s all‑compatible ACS880 industrial low‑voltage AC drive platform, designed for multi‑motor industrial systems based on common DC‑bus architectureABB Group. Instead of independent rectifiers for each motor, one shared supply unit feeds multiple inverter modules via a common DC link. This configuration enables regenerative energy exchange between axes, reduces mains power demand, saves cabinet space, and cuts installation and cabling costs for coordinated multi‑axis applicationseero.
The portfolio consists of supply modules (diode supply units DSU, IGBT regenerative supply units RSU) and inverter modules. Air‑cooled versions cover power from 1.5 kW up to 3200 kW, while liquid‑cooled variants extend up to 6000 kW, with rated voltages of 380‑500 V and 525‑690 Veero. These shelf‑style modules are intended for cabinet integration by system integrators and machine builders, supporting flexible cabinet layout including straight‑line, L‑shape and U‑shape arrangementsABB Group.

Core Technical Features

  1. Direct Torque Control (DTC)

Equipped with ABB enhanced Direct Torque Control as standard. It delivers precise speed, torque and position control, supporting open‑loop (encoder‑less) and closed‑loop operation for induction motors, permanent‑magnet synchronous motors and reluctance motorseero. Built‑in motion functions allow axis synchronisation and positioning without external motion controllers; further customisation is available via IEC 61131‑3 PLCopen programmingeero.

  2. Integrated Safety Functions

Safe Torque Off (STO) is factory‑standard. Optional extended safety functions support safe‑speed and safe‑stop requirements, lowering the need for external safety hardware. Coated circuit boards are applied as standard for improved performance in harsh industrial environmentseero.

  3. Modular & Service‑friendly Design

Multiple frame sizes are available. Hot‑swap‑oriented module construction, removable memory units and quick‑connection accessories simplify commissioning, module replacement and on‑site maintenance. The typical maintenance interval reaches up to 9 years. All units undergo full‑load factory testing before deliveryABB Group.

  4. Broad Connectivity

Multi‑slot control unit supports major fieldbus and industrial Ethernet protocols for seamless connection to PLC, HMI and higher‑level automation systems. Commissioning and tuning can be completed via the intuitive local control panel with USB port or ABB Drive Composer PC toolABB Group.

  5. Energy‑saving DC‑bus Concept

Braking energy from decelerating drives can be directly reused by other inverters on the same DC‑bus. Regenerative supply modules feed surplus energy back to the utility grid. Total harmonic distortion can be kept low when applying active supply units, optimising grid qualityABB Group.

Main Benefits

  • Lower capital and operating expenditure: shared power supply reduces component count, cabling work and overall cabinet footprinteero
  • High power density for compact cabinet builds
  • Unified software platform across all ACS880 drives, shortening engineering and training cycles
  • Flexible braking solutions: energy sharing on DC‑bus may eliminate braking choppers in many cases
  • Scalable system: add or remove inverter modules according to the number of controlled motor axes

Typical Applications & Industries

Widely deployed in multi‑axis industrial processes: metal processing, mining, oil & gas, marine & offshore, pulp‑and‑paper, material‑handling cranes & conveyors, automotive production lines, cement, food & beverage, water‑wastewater treatment, test benches, winders and processing lineseero. Marine‑approved variants satisfy classification society requirements for ship‑board installationseero
